Jagannath Shankarshet (1803-1865) Jagannath “Nana” Shankarshet was one of the earliest pioneers of the 19th Century India,who transformed Mumbai into a modern city.He was an educationalist and a philanthropist. Most of the educational institutes that he helped and contributed to establish as well as actively patronised throughout his life, became the premier educational institutions of Western India. |

Ramabai Ranade (1862-1924) Ramabai Ranade was the pioneer of the modern women's movement in India. She was married to Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade, one of the pioneers of Indian Renaissance. Though an illiterate at the time of her marriage Ramabai with the guidance of Justice Ranade toiled hard to educate herself in face of all the opposition. Ramabai made her entry into public life in 1870s, but it wasafter Justice Ranade's death that she identified herself with the cause of women in India. She was the Founder and President of Seva Sadan, a social institution for rehabilitation of distressed women. |
